Occasionally the damage incurred to a tooth is severe enough that it can no longer withstand normal forces without aid. In these situations, it
is necessary to cover the tooth in part or in hole to prevent fracture of the tooth. Teeth that are left without this added support will often
result in a fracture that requires root canal treatment or premature loss of the tooth. Obviously, our goal is to step in prior to this event
and create a more favorable situation for the tooth.
In other circumstances, patients experience unexplained pain with teeth that often increases in severity when chewing or drinking cold beverages.
This pain is likely due to a hairline crack in the tooth. Placing a crown on these teeth relieves the pain and allows the tooth to return to full
function.
Construction of your crown will usually require two appointments. The first appointment will be the longer of the two. At this appointment, Dr.
Hancock will remove the bad tooth structure and outer layer of tooth to prepare the tooth for your new crown. A very accurate impression is made
of the tooth and sent to a laboratory for creation of your crown. You will leave this appointment with a temporary crown which will serve as a
bandage for the tooth until your new crown is delivered. At the second appointment, Dr. Hancock will remove the temporary crown and place the
crown ensuring an accurate and proper bite.
